August 1, 2018
Dear Whitehall-Yearling Ram Student and Parent/Guardian,
We have just completed an excellent year here at the high school and we look forward to an even better year starting on Monday, August 20, 2018. During the past year we tried to improve the learning environment for all of our students. Like you, I want our students to feel safe and I want them to be challenged so they can do their best work.
In regard to our dress code rules, our school board has demonstrated a continued effort to work with students and parents to evolve the dress code into something amenable to all involved. Starting on the first day of school we ask that you help us by sending your student to school in proper dress code, ready to learn. The dress code can be found on our school’s website. With the changes in the dress code rules, the expectation is every day, in every way. Let me be clear – with regard to students and the dress code, there will be no exceptions!
Below you will find some information to help prepare for the opening of school.
Classes begin on Monday, August 20, 2018, promptly at 8:25 a.m. Students will report to their Homeroom at 8:25. Grade 9 students will receive their schedules at Freshmen Orientation while students in grades 10, 11, 12 will have an opportunity to pick up their schedules prior to school starting as follows:
- Monday, August 13, 2018 and Tuesday, August 14, 2018
- 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Freshmen Orientation – Wednesday, August 15, 2018 – 6:00 p.m. There will be important information delivered at this orientation. It is essential for both a parent/guardian and the student to attend.
Free breakfast for ALL students will be served from 7:50 a.m. - 8:20 a.m. each day. No Breakfast will be served after 8:20! Doors to the building will not open until 7:50 a.m.
Free lunch for ALL students will be served each day. Fast food is not permitted in our school and no food/drink of any kind is permitted in the classroom.
Ram Time – This year, we have set aside a time every day 3rd period for every student to receive the guidance needed for a better academic pathway. Students have been assigned to a teacher in the building in small, grade level groups. This time with students is meant to provide the support, advice, instruction and opportunity necessary to develop their college and career skills.
Twitter and Remind – There is a “Mr. Smathers” Twitter account and a “Mr. Smathers” Remind account available to both parents and students. Information throughout the year will be disseminated through these accounts. Please register for one or both to be sure you are up-to-date on news and events at WYHS. Check the WYHS website for registration instructions.
This year, we are beginning the year with faculty, staff, administrators, parents and students focusing on Academics, Attendance and good Behavior. We are “One Ram Family” and we need a coordinated, committed effort to create a safe and productive supporting culture and learning environment.
